Road traffic accidents account for a far greater proportion of moderate-to-severe head injuries.<\/li><li>Alcohol may be involved in up to 65% of adult head injuries.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e4a5fde elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e4a5fde\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Assessment\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b3dcd44 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b3dcd44\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Head injury patients should be taken directly to a centre which can provide resuscitation and management of head injuries and trauma leading to multiple injuries.<\/p><p>Management should begin immediately with resuscitation, as outlined by the appropriate guidelines \u2013 eg, Adult Trauma Life Support guidelines. Head injury patients are being assessed using Glasgow Coma Scale.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-90be5d3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"90be5d3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Investigations\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1eb2115 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1eb2115\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n \t<li>CT Scan<\/li>\n \t<li>MRI brain<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e147173 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e147173\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Types of Head injury:\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1db2693 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1db2693\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-31e7bab elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"31e7bab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><ul><li><strong>Intracranial Haemorrhage :<\/strong><ol><li>Extradural: not common. Classically, the middle meningeal artery is torn under a temporal bone fracture and follows an injury-lucid interval coma pattern. However, many are non-classical. 80% progress to uncal herniation. Immediate evacuation of the haematoma is required.<\/li><li>\u00a0Subdural: caused by sudden acceleration-deceleration of brain parenchyma with tearing of the bridging veins. Common in severe traumatic brain injury, atrophic brains (the elderly, alcoholics) and children aged &lt;2 years. May be acute (&lt;24 hours), subacute (1-14 days) or chronic (&gt;2 weeks). There may be few signs with chronic subdurals. High morbidity and mortality if acute. Surgery is usually required.<\/li><li>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/patient.info\/doctor\/subarachnoid-haemorrhage-pro\">Subarachnoid<\/a>:\u00a0the most common haemorrhage in moderate-to-severe injury. May present with meningeal signs and has a significant mortality.<\/li><li><b>\u00a0<\/b>Intracerebral: cerebral contusions are common and often associated with a subarachnoid haemorrhage. Intracerebral haemorrhage can occur days after significant blunt trauma, often at the site of resolving contusions (especially in patients with coagulopathy). CT scans in the immediate post-injury phase may be normal.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee04a75 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ee04a75\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><ul><li><strong>Extracranial haemorrhage\u00a0<\/strong>: scalp lacerations, nasal injuries and injuries to the face and neck can lead to significant blood loss<\/li><li><strong>Skull fractures\u00a0<\/strong>: up to 50% will not have significant loss of consciousness or any neurological findings. Prophylactic antibiotics are controversial.<\/li><li><strong>Diffuse axonal injury\u00a0<\/strong>: shearing\/rotational forces disrupt axonal fibres in the white matter and brainstem. Common in motor vehicle accidents and \u2018shaken baby syndrome\u2019. Injury occurs immediately and is essentially irreversible. There is a rapid increase in intracranial pressure and patients are often unresponsive. CT scan may be normal. Treatment is limited to minimising secondary damage.<\/li><li><strong>Penetrating injuries<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 eg,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/patient.info\/doctor\/gunshot-injuries\">gunshot wounds<\/a>.
