We provide this option for patients who have\u00a0trigeminal neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia or hemifacial spasm. Any of these conditions can result from a vein or artery compressing one of the cranial nerves. When this occurs, every pulse of blood through the vessel irritates the nerve, triggering stabbing facial pain and muscle spasms.<\/p><p>Our first line of treatment is always medication. Alternatively, the surgeon may insert a small sling to pull the blood vessel away from the nerve.<\/p><p>While considered the most invasive surgery for these conditions, microvascular decompression is also the best way to fix the underlying problem. It causes the least damage to the nerve and does the best job of freeing patients from pain or spasms and reliance on medication. Besides physical symptoms, hemifacial spasm can also affect social and work life.\u00a0The\u00a0physical symptoms may include:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>Unilateral facial twitching\u00a0<\/li><li>Changes in hearing\u00a0<\/li><li>Clicking sound in the ear\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5a72f39 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5a72f39\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How do you treat hemifacial spasm? \n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-13fd3f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"13fd3f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Because of its rarity, hemifacial spasm is often misdiagnosed. Other related conditions, such as blepharospasm, are typical diagnoses for patients.\u00a0However, blepharospasm causes bilateral symptoms, meaning they occur on both sides of the face. In contrast,\u00a0hemifacial spasm only affects one side of the face (unilateral).\u00a0In some cases, it may also be diagnosed as anxiety or even a dental problem.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Misdiagnosed patients\u00a0may receive\u00a0prescription\u00a0medication for treatment, usually anti-anxiety medication or anti-convulsants.\u00a0One of\u00a0the most common\u00a0treatments\u00a0for diagnosed hemifacial spasm\u00a0is Botox.
